What does fence replacement cost in Melbourne?

A replacement quote has more lines than a new fence. Here is each one, the published 2026 range, and what pushes it up or down.

Quick answer Replacing a fence costs the new fence plus removal. Published November 2026 Melbourne figures put old timber paling removal and disposal at about $16 to $47 per metre, on top of the new fence itself. Gates, extra height, slope and tight access are extra lines, and a fibro (asbestos cement) fence must be removed by an asbestos removalist who holds a WorkSafe licence. Shared with a neighbour, each owner usually pays half. These are market ranges, not our prices; the free online instant estimate prices your boundary, removal included, in about 2 minutes.

A worked 20 metre example (market ranges)

A worn 20 metre, 1.8m timber paling fence is replaced like for like, with one pedestrian gate. Using published ranges: the new fence at about $120 to $190 per metre is $2,400 to $3,800; removal at $16 to $47 per metre is $320 to $940; one gate is $260 to $840. The total is roughly $2,980 to $5,580, or about half each when the neighbour shares a sufficient fence. A gate that only serves one yard is usually paid by that owner.

Fibro (asbestos cement) fences

Many older Melbourne fences are flat or corrugated fibro sheet, which can contain asbestos. WorkSafe Victoria says asbestos removal by a business must be done by an asbestos removalist who holds a licence, with limited exceptions for small amounts of non-friable material, and licence holders must notify WorkSafe before starting. A 1.8m sheet fence passes 10 square metres in about 5.5 metres of length, so most fibro fences are a job for a licence holder. We do not remove asbestos ourselves: a removalist with an asbestos licence takes it out first, then we build the new fence. Our old fence removal guide covers disposal in more detail.

What pushes a replacement quote up

What brings it down

How long a replacement takes

Removal and the new fence usually happen together: old fence out and posts in on day one, rails and palings on day two, for a typical 20 to 30 metre boundary. Fencing Notices, permits and asbestos removal come first. Our guides on how long a fence takes and the replacement process cover the steps.

Common questions

How much does it cost to replace a fence in Melbourne?

The new fence plus removal. Published November 2026 Melbourne figures put old timber paling removal and disposal at about $16 to $47 per metre on top of the new fence. A 20 metre like-for-like timber replacement with one gate works out roughly $2,980 to $5,580 in total using published ranges, often shared with the neighbour.

Is old fence removal included in a fence quote?

Not always. Some quotes include removal and disposal, others list it separately. Check the quote says who removes the old fence, where it goes and whether tip fees are included.

Who pays to remove the old fence?

Removal is part of replacing a dividing fence, so it is usually shared equally with the neighbour along with the new fence, unless you agree otherwise.

Can you remove a fibro fence?

A fibro (asbestos cement) fence must be removed by an asbestos removalist who holds a WorkSafe licence. We arrange the new fence once the removalist has taken the old one away.

Does a sloping block cost more?

Usually. Published Melbourne guides suggest sloping ground can add 20 to 40 percent, because stepping needs longer posts and more cutting. The free on-site measure confirms how the slope will be handled.

Do you repair fences instead of replacing them?

No. We build new fences and full replacements only. If a fence is leaning or rotten at the posts, replacement is usually the better spend anyway.
