Colorbond fencing
The standard panel widths and heights sold in Victoria, how tops and extensions work, and how to pick a profile and colour your neighbour will be happy with too.
A Colorbond fence is a kit of steel posts, top and bottom rails and infill sheets rolled from COLORBOND steel. Each manufacturer has its own range and names. The figures below are from the manufacturers' own published ranges.
| Range | Panel width | Heights | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lysaght Neetascreen | 2350mm or 3100mm | 1500, 1800, 2100mm | 2100mm not offered at 3100mm wide |
| Lysaght Smartascreen | 2350mm or 3100mm | 1500, 1800, 2100mm | Same look from both sides |
| Lysaght with lattice or slat top | 2350mm only | 1500, 1800, 2100mm overall | Top is included in the overall height |
| Stratco Good Neighbour | 2350mm (standard) | 1800 or 2100mm common | Several profiles; lattice screen tops available. Confirm sizes with the supplier |
From Lysaght's 2026 fencing and screening brochure for Victoria and other eastern states, and Stratco's published Good Neighbour range (Stratco's own pages could not be opened when this was checked, so confirm current sizes with the supplier). Panel steel is typically 0.35mm high tensile.
Divide the boundary length by the panel width and round up. A 20 metre fence with 2350mm panels needs 9 panels (8.5 rounded up), with a post between each and at both ends. Corners, gates and changes in level add posts and cut panels, which is why a measured quote beats a calculator. Our map tool does this count for you as part of the free online instant estimate.

Get my Colorbond estimate →A lattice or slat top gives a lighter finish and lets some light through at the top. With Lysaght's range the top is part of the panel's overall height and only comes in the 2350mm width, so a 1800mm fence with a lattice top is still 1800mm overall. Stratco sells screen top kits that sit above the main sheet. Either way, the finished height is what councils measure, so a "1.8m fence plus a 300mm top" is a 2.1m fence for permit purposes.
Some profiles look identical from both yards, which helps when you share the fence with a neighbour. Lysaght says Smartascreen has the same appeal from both sides, and Stratco says its Wavelok profile is identical on both sides. Colour is also double sided on fencing sheets, so both yards see the same colour. Agree the profile and colour with your neighbour in writing before anything is ordered.
The COLORBOND steel fencing range includes Surfmist, Evening Haze, Domain, Paperbark, Dune, Riversand, Shale Grey, Bluegum, Pale Eucalypt, Wilderness, Wollemi, Woodland Grey, Basalt, Ironstone and Monument. Some suppliers also stock a secondary range that varies by region. Mid greys and greens (Woodland Grey, Basalt, Wilderness) hide dust and blend into gardens; very dark colours such as Monument look sharp but show scratches and get hot in full sun.
Taller panels cost more, and a 2.1m fence adds a permit. Longer 3100mm panels can mean fewer posts on a long, flat run, but they are heavier to handle and not available at 2.1m. Our Colorbond fence cost guide has published 2026 market ranges and worked examples, and Colorbond vs timber compares the two materials.

Most Colorbond fence panels sold in Victoria are 2350mm wide. Some ranges, such as Lysaght Neetascreen and Smartascreen, also come in 3100mm, but not at the 2100mm height.
The standard heights are 1500mm, 1800mm and 2100mm. 1800mm is the usual backyard height. A side or rear fence over 2m generally needs a building permit in Victoria.
With Lysaght's range the lattice or slat top is part of the panel's overall height. With add-on screen top kits it sits above the sheet. Councils measure the finished height, so a 1.8m fence with a 300mm top is 2.1m for permit purposes.
Lysaght Smartascreen is described as having the same appeal from both sides, and Stratco says its Wavelok profile is identical on both sides. Fencing sheets are coloured on both faces.
With 2350mm panels, about 9 (20 divided by 2.35, rounded up), plus a post between each panel and at both ends. Corners, gates and slope add more, which the free on-site measure confirms.
Mid greys and greens such as Woodland Grey, Basalt and Wilderness are common because they hide dust and blend into gardens. Monument and other dark colours look sharp but show scratches and absorb heat.
